The 1.3-kilometre long Baana bicycle and pedestrian route through central Helsinki starts at the corner of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and ends in Ruoholahti. It has been built in a former railway corridor with plenty of trees and bushes, rest areas and environmental artworks along the way, and it has been a hugely popular walking and cycling route among city residents from day one. An old railway corridor could easily be a rather dark and intimidating place, but in this case it has been successfully converted to create a light, safe and inviting route. The route starts in the centre of the city where a great deal of events are organised throughout the year. The lighting control system can be adjusted and adapted to suit different needs.
