Jätkäsaari is a new residential district built in a former port area. The cable-stayed bridge commissioned by the city of Helsinki and designed by WSP Finland Oy is 143 metres long. The aim was to design a bridge which would lend itself to the special features of the area. The bridge is indeed a visible landmark in the maritime landscape of the Ruohosaari and Jätkäsaari areas. Bridges are often very significant as elements of urban landscapes. In terms of lighting, instead of emphasising the Crusell bridge as a landmark, the aim was to create an inviting element. Residents and visitors are able to walk amidst a warm white light and look out towards sea without being dazzled. The outer surfaces of the bridge are not lit separately, but light is used as a very versatile element.
